Meet Alli: our new Community Manager

If you saw last week’s blog post about Olesia, our new Member Concierge, you probably know that we’ve been adding to our Homestead team. Alli (full name: Allison, but she responds to both) also joined us in mid-June, and even though she isn’t fluent in Russian like Olesia, she’s also pretty rad.

We know, we know, you’re itching to learn more about Alli. We were too, that’s why we hired her. Keep on reading to learn about her toilet paper hanging preference.

About Alli:

With a diploma in PR from MacEwan University and experience working at local startup Pogo CarShare and business accelerator TEC Edmonton, Alli brings a unique perspective to the team. Her passion for entrepreneurship is undeniable and her knack for marketing is inspiring.

Full of freckles and enthusiasm, Alli’s role as Community Manager is to facilitate relationships between members, foster community collaboration and bring new folks into our space. And since she’s a kick-ass marketer, she also helps lead all marketing initiatives, including social media management, event planning, e-newsletter development, and collateral creation.

When she isn’t holding down the fort here at Homestead, you can find her on a downtown patio with a drink in her hand, sunbathing on any beach she can find, or scouting out the best Poutine in Edmonton.

And now for a rapid-fire interview with Alli:

Q: What is your favourite local brand?

A: Right now, I’d 100% say Poppy Barley. Edmonton has so many amazing local brands that I support as much as I can, but PB is something else. Gimme ALL the (ethically made) shoes and accessories!

Q: If you could be from any other decade or era, which would you choose?

A: I mean, I kinda dig 2019. I definitely wouldn’t be in my line of work (digital marketing, social media, etc.) if I was born in the past, which would suck because I love what I do! But if I had to choose, it’d be the 80s. Big hair, neon colours and leotard filled aerobics classes…yeah, I like it.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

A: “Pick your hill to die on.” This saying has stayed with me since my PR prof said it in class a few years ago. When it comes to an argument or disagreement, are you willing to risk it all in order to win? Or can you move on and let it go? I’ve learned that it’s almost always the latter.

Oh, and never go to bed angry. And always kiss goodnight.

Q: Do you have any tattoos?

A: Yep! Got my first one when I was 17 and I now have four. I have a floral foot sleeve with a quote, a large calf piece of my old dog, Strudel, a sun and a lilac branch, both on my left arm. TBH, I’m pretty embarrassed by my first tattoo... But if I like you enough, I might show you.

Q: What is your favourite TV show or movie?
A: Okay this is hard—I’m obsessed with quite a few. I really, really like Mad Men. I’ve watched that one a few times and it never gets old. But for pure entertainment value: RuPaul’s Drag Race. If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?!

Q: And most importantly… Toilet paper: over or under?

A: Over. I can’t believe that there are actually people on this earth that hang it under. I actually recently posted this poll on my Instagram story because my roommate hangs hers the wrong way. Spoiler: I won.

Give her a follow on Instagram to peep pictures of cute pups, mouth-watering food, and gin… lots of gin 🍸: @alli.harri
